About Us

Community Partners of Alabama (COPA) is a nonprofit organization committed to strengthening communities and expanding opportunities for youth and families across the Montgomery metropolitan area. Founded in February 2000 by Minister Earl S. Wagner, COPA began with a simple yet profound act of generosity. A church member, recovering from serious injuries sustained in a car accident, donated five hundred dollars and asked that it be used to “do good work for those in need.” From that seed of compassion and purpose, COPA was born.

For more than two decades, COPA has remained dedicated to advancing educational equity, promoting community wellness, and developing collaborative solutions that uplift underserved populations. Our mission is to provide educational assistance to disadvantaged children while supporting social, health, and welfare initiatives that foster stability, safety, and long-term community growth. We believe meaningful change happens through partnership, and we work closely with families, schools, churches, and community agencies to create sustainable pathways to success.

COPA’s impact is driven by hands-on programming and strategic partnerships. In 2022, we co-sponsored a High-Tech Summer Academy in the Valley Park/Spring Valley community, exposing middle and high school students to cutting-edge fields such as geospatial systems, game coding, and drone technology. That same year, COPA sponsored a Medical Science Career Seminar, connecting students with mentors and professionals from Meharry Medical College, and supported the Montgomery City of Refuge Annual Youth College Road Trip, helping students explore college campuses and envision their future in higher education.

Recognizing that academic success is closely tied to emotional and mental well-being, COPA also hosted a Mental Health Forum for families impacted by grief and COVID-19–related stress. The forum provided education, open dialogue, and access to on-site counseling resources. In 2023, COPA partnered with Montgomery City of Refuge Church and Capitol Heights Middle School to launch the Man Up Project, a male mentorship and character-development initiative designed to guide and empower middle school students.

Today, COPA continues to build upon its legacy through the SPARK Program (Scholars Program for Academic Resilience and Knowledge)—an ongoing academic enrichment and personal development initiative serving students year after year. Through SPARK and our expanding network of community partnerships, COPA remains steadfast in its commitment to empowering young people, strengthening families, and building resilient communities throughout the Montgomery metropolitan area.
